Granola: It’s a tasty breakfast staple, but many options are loaded with added sugars and don’t set you up for morning success. The Prevention Test Kitchen wants you to have the best of both worlds (tasty! nutritious!) and worked with a nutritionist to scour through the aisles and find the best healthy granolas to add to your breakfast routine.

While some brands fill their products with added sugars, including honey and maple syrup, our taste tests opted for as many low-sugar options as possible. Our favorite granolas are high in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, and list either a whole grain, a seed, or a nut as the first ingredient. Whole grains are important to look for when reading an ingredient list as they help to prevent blood sugar spikes and increase fiber intake, key for healthy digestion. Studies also show that consuming whole grains can help to lower cholesterol.

Meet the Experts: Keri Glassman, M.S., R.D., owner of nutritiouslife.com, and the experts at the Prevention Test Kitchen.

Curious about calorie count? “Granola is going to be naturally higher in calories than many other snacks even in its healthiest form, and that is OK!” says Keri Glassman, M.S., R.D., owner of nutritiouslife.com. This is likely because it is rich in nuts and seeds, which are naturally high in calories, as well as healthy fats and other nutrients which studies have shown can reduce the risk of some diseases. Instead of focusing on the calorie count on the label, she suggests picking granolas that are flavored with fruit that preferably has no added sugars, as well as raw nuts and seeds to avoid additional oils that can cause cardiac problems.

It’s important to note that while delicious no-sugar-added granolas can be tricky to find, there are some out there. But our healthy granola brands aim for fewer than 5 g of added sugars, along with other nutritional benefits, like fiber, protein, and vitamins and minerals. Check out the Prevention Test Kitchen’s favorite healthy granola brands, plus learn about what to look for when scouring the shelves for the best granola brands to buy.

How to choose the healthiest granolas

Taste-Testers Say These Healthy Granola Brands Are Perfect for Your Next Snack (14)

Here’s what to consider on granola brand labels:

Ingredients: It’s important to look for whole grains or nuts and seeds as the first ingredient. Dried fruit with no added sugar and coconut are also great additions, says Glassman. “Ideally organic,” she suggests.

Calories: Glassman suggests focusing more on the ingredients list than the calorie amount as this healthy cereal can be naturally packed with higher-calorie ingredients.

Sugar: Granolas can be loaded with added sugars, and just because they’re sweetened with maple, dates, or honey does not necessarily make them healthier, says Glassman. “I prefer dates and honey over other sources such as high fructose corn syrup, but you have to remember it is still sugar.” However if you are consuming a granola with added sugars, pair it with no-sugar-added yogurt or snack on a handful on its own.

Nutritional benefits: Granola is not naturally high in protein or fiber, so it’s a good sign if brands tout these nutrients on the label. It probably means there is added protein powder or a high concentration of whole grains, but check ingredients lists to be sure it’s coming from a natural source.
